Introduction

Greetings, fellow lovers of the written word. I am a new author on the scene with a passion for exploring the many facets of the human experience, both light and dark. My stories sometimes delve into the sinister tendencies that exist within us all, yet I balance these themes with characters who inspire hope and remind us of the resilience and goodness of the human spirit. In my writing, I challenge readers to confront the shadows within and examine what it means to be human, all while weaving a captivating and suspenseful tale. Some of my stories are not for the faint of heart, but for those who are willing to delve deep into the complexities of the human psyche. So if you're in the mood for an emotionally charged journey, let's explore what it means to be human, together.

MY INSPIRATIONS

Favorite Author Book Tours & Signings

Meeting some of my favorite authors has demystified the art of writing, even the most well-known and successful authors reveal their humanity and passion for storytelling.

In March 2023, Park Books hosted a visiting author series event at Maryland Hall featuring best-selling author Jodi Picoult and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. See my Weekly Blog for details.

The biggest takeaway I have from all my conversations with authors is this piece of advice: Write! Now, on to the next step: Get Published!

MY INSPIRATIONS

Exploring

A trip to Key West to visit Ernest Hemingway's Historic Home & Museum prompted me to write for 30 hours over a three-day period! That trip was pure gold! This was no hedonistic or over-indulgent trip, mind you -- far from it. As a backstory, before deciding to go to Key West, one of my sisters and I had already been on a 937-mile journey from the Mid-Atlantic to Tampa, FL. Because I had broken both of my legs just two months prior, persistent swelling and pain relegated me to passenger only. My sister was a trooper! We had some family business to take care of in Tampa, but on December 29th, we finished. We could have packed our small bags and driven north but decided we wanted a bit of adventure.

My sister drove toward Key West from Tampa as I busied myself with AirBnB. 425 miles and seven hours later, we arrived for my first-ever visit to Key West. Amazingly, we found an incredible AirBnB directly on Duvall Street, perfect for overlooking New Year's Eve festivities. During the day, a rented golf cart carried us all over the island. We bought the most scrumptious Key Lime pie (look up KeyLimePieBakery.com), took sad photos of the defaced Southernmost Point buoy, and daydreamed about owning this property or that.

The most memorable portion of my Key West trip was the visit to Ernest Hemingway's home. Sure, it has museum entry fees, cordoned-off rooms, and personal effects safely encased in plexiglass -- things I have read others complain about, but I didn't mind. I went through the house and the grounds to listen and feel. I closed my eyes in Hemingway's dining room and envisioned boisterous laughter and conversation among him and his friends. Perhaps Hemingway busied himself in the kitchen cleaning freshly-caught fish or mixing cocktails as he joked with his guests milling about. Perhaps the famous faces captured in photographs from that era elbowed one another and tried one-upping each other with their own tales. Perhaps, back in Hemingway's day, the sounds of today's traffic and tourism were replaced with roiling surf and whooshing winds made fragrant from so much flowering foliage on the grounds.

That, dear reader, is why the trip to Key West -- to Hemingway's house was pure gold! My reflections are more about what I felt, heard, smelled, and envisioned during my brief visit. Should I return to Key West, I will be sure to return to excite my senses with Hemingway's fishing retreat.

"Die, already! I have things to do," the man yelled. He kicked one of Boyd's legs using the top of his foot, but not hard enough to leave a bruise. He couldn’t leave marks—Boyd's death needed to look like a natural heart attack.

There was no reaction from Boyd. On impulse, the man bent over and closed Boyd's eyelids with his fingertips and then straightened. There, that was better. He didn’t like the way Boyd was staring at him even in death throes—blaming him for this when it was Boyd's own fault for not listening. He was a stubborn old man and it served him right.

Excerpts of Current Work

Single-word questions are all I managed to compose in my brain. What? How? It took me at least a full minute of deep, calming breaths to think clearly. I don’t have time for distractions right now. I’ll deal with the email later. For now, the only thing I can control is how I show up today.

"I Loved You Before You Were You"

At three years old, Samuel already bore a weary, wizened countenance. He peered out of the hut’s threshold, studying Grace’s face for a sign that breakfast was ready. As an answer, Grace held out a cup to Samuel, which he happily accepted. Grace prompted Samuel to deliver Charles’ breakfast, then she took her own and her mother’s food into her unlighted home.
